“Oh my gosh,” I said, melting to the floor. I scooped up Pickles in my arms and gave her the best hug I could summon. I couldn’t stop the happy tears from streaming down my face. “You saved her!”

Pickles, who really just wanted to continue gorging herself, scurried out of my grip and back to her plate. Without thinking, I pulled Leo into a hug as well. “Thank you,” I said. “You have no idea how much this means to me.” I half sobbed in his ear.

Charlie cleared her throat and I realized I was still hugging Leo. Jumping away with a start, I turned to thank them all. “I owe you guys. Thanks,” I said, trying to cover for how awkward I suddenly felt.

Mary grinned. “It was Charlie who noticed her,” she explained. “She must have snuck out of your pack during our escape.”

“No biggie,” Charlie said. “I kept good care of her until we got here, and then Leo figured she needed a treat after everything she’d been through. Said there was no way you’d ever forgive us if you found Pickles upset.”

Leo nodded. “It was the least we could do. Putting her through all that trouble. Pickles, I mean.” His face turned slightly pink.

I plunked down and rolled my shoulders to unknot them while Pickles had the feast of her lifetime at our feet. Not only was I overjoyed to be free from the police, but the food smelled so good, I could barely concentrate. Instantly, my whole world revolved around carbs. They had ordered pizza, spaghetti, lasagna, and what looked to be every dessert on the menu, along with glasses of sparkling water and juices. I crammed a slice of pizza into my mouth and sank back against my chair in a deliriously happy cheese coma. “Mmph, pho goodf!”

“We needed to make sure we weren’t followed,” Grace said. “Once we met at the pizzeria, we hatched our little plan to break you out. You can thank Mo for the idea. Usually he specializes in classical music, but this time, he found us the perfect synthesized death metal. Bert piped it through the headquarters’ PA system at a decibel that could stop the cops in their tracks. And Charlie used some mice to track the ventilation system and figure out where we could grab you. Pretty genius, right?”

“Really genius,” I said. I swallowed my pizza and moved on to a pile of cannoli. Something about being chased by the cops really works up an appetite. “But how did you know which station I was at? There must be several in the city.”

Leo reached and twirled the small pin on my shoulder, sending a quick thrill through me. My atom pin, from my first day at the academy. I didn’t even realize I’d stuck it to my shirt. “Didn’t Martha tell you?” My heart skipped a beat as he waggled his eyebrows at me. “Accessories are crucial to a good outfit.”

I sucked in a breath, heat rising to my cheeks.
